Same Q, Different A II / 같은 질문, 다른 답 II

We interviewed a number of American students and formal North Korean students with same questions. And these are the answers we got. The questions are directly discussed and written by formal North Korean defectors.
아래는 미국 학생들과 탈북민 학생들에게 같은 질문을 가지고 질문을 하고 얻은 답들 입니다. 질문들은 (전)탈북민이 직접 토론하고 작성한 질문들입니다.

It is very new and eye-opening to see the comparison made between North Koreans and Americans. It is intriguing to see how they are so different.
같은 질문에 답이 완전히 다른것을 볼때, 그 살아온 삶과 배경이 담긴것을 보면 참 놀랍습니다.

These are the answers from Jasmine and Hyeok (made-up name).
미국 고등학생 ‘자스민’과 탈북민 ‘혁’(가명) 이가 답해주었습니다.

1. 북한에 있었을때 미국 / 미국인들에 대해서 들어보거나 알고 있는게 있었나요?
   Have you ever heard of or learned about America / Americans back in N.Korea

   Hyeok 🇰🇵 :  미국에 대해서는 적대감을 갖고 있었습니다. (승냥이, 제국주의 라는 생각을 많이 한것 같습니다. (승냥이*: 떼로 몰려들며 약자를 괴롭히는 질 나쁜 불량배들을 뜻. 북한이나 반미주의자들이 미국과 그 국적인을 가리켜 미(국)제(국주의) 승냥이 라는 표현을 썼는데, 약탈자의 프레임을 씌우기 위해서 쓰는 단어)
   I’ve always had hostility against America, criticizing their imperialism like anyone else. We also called them Dhole (a canid native to Central, South, East and Southeast Asia. Also a slang used to call thugs and bullies. People in North Korea or anti-Americans used this word towards American citizens to associate them with plunderers.

   북한 이탈주민에 관해 들어보거나 생각해본 적 있나요?
   Have you ever heard of or learned about North Korean defectors?
   Jasmine 🇺🇸 : No, not really. I figured that there had to be some people who defected from N.Korea, but I have never met or heard of any.
   없습니다. 북한을 탈출하는 사람들이 있다 정도만 알았지, 제대로 듣거나 본적은 없습니다.

2. 본인은 자유를 누리고 있다고 생각하시나요?
   Do you think you are fully enjoying “freedom” right now?

   Hyeok 🇰🇵 : 네. 저는 대한미국에서 현재 자유를 누리고 있습니다.
   Yes, I am enjoying freedom in South Korea.

   Jasmine 🇺🇸 : I believe so. America is actually a very free country, one of the most free in the world, and I am blessed to be a citizen of it.
   네 그렇다고 믿습니다. 미국은 자유가 있는 나라이고, 세계에서 가장 자유로운 나라 중에 하나 입니다. 그리고 저는 미국에 국민이 된것이 축복이라고 생각합니다.

3. 미국에는 진짜 자유가 있다고 생각하나요? 미국에 살고 있는 사람들은 진짜 자유를 충분히 누리고 있을까요?
   Do you think there is true freedom in America? Are people in America truly enjoying their freedom?

   Hyeok 🇰🇵 : 네. 미국은 자유가 있다고 생각합니다. 개인의 의사표현을 자유롭게 하고 행동할 수 있다는 것이 자유를 충분히 누리는 것이라고 생각합니다.
   Yes, I believe that there is true freedom in America. In my context, being able to express oneself and to act in a way one wants is to fully enjoy freedom.

   북한에도 자유가 있다고 생각하나요? 북한에 살고 있는 사람들은 자유를 충분히 누리고 있을까요?
   Do you think there is freedom in North Korea? Do North Koreans enjoy freedom? If so, to what extent? 

   Jasmine 🇺🇸 : From what I have heard, there is not a lot of freedom in North Korea. I have heard that all of the news sources are government controlled, so there is only one side of each story and therefore the people are quite unaware of the reality of their situation. North Korea also has a dictatorship, which often translates into citizens not having many freedoms. I believe that there is only one political party in North Korea, as well. I do not think that North Koreans enjoy as much freedom as the rest of the world may. Again, they may not be aware of their limited freedoms, though.
   제가 Freedom Crusaders를 통해 들은것에 따르면 북한에 자유는 없는 것 같습니다. 북한의 모든 매체는 다 정부로 인해 통제된다고 들었고, 그로 인해 당연히 국민들은 한 쪽의 이야기 밖에 듣지 못하고 그들과 세상을 둘러싼 실체를 알 기회가 없습니다. 또한 북한은 독재자 아래에서 움직이는 국가 입니다. 독재국가를 번역하자면 자유가 없는 국민들입니다. 또한 북한에는 한개의 정치당 밖에 없다고 알고 있습니다. 이런것을 봤을때, 북한인들은 현재 세상이 누리고 있는 자유를 누리지 못한다고 생각을 할 수 밖에 없습니다. 그리고 이 제한된 자유 또한, 그들은, 인식하지 못하고 있을 수 있습니다.
   

4. 미국의 자유의 특이점은 무엇이라고 생각하시나요?
   What is a factor that makes freedom in America different and distinct?

   Hyeok🇰🇵 :  정부의 권력보다 국민의 권위가 더 높다는 생각을 합니다. 
   That people’s authority and power is above the ones of government.

   북한주민과 남한주민의 차이점은 무엇이라고 생각하시나요?
   Is there any difference you are aware of between North and South Koreans?

   Jasmine 🇺🇸 : I am not aware of a lot of differences other than those of the governments and some of the freedoms South Koreans have. I know that South Korea does not have a dictatorship and that South Koreans are able to travel out of the country. I have heard that North Koreans are not allowed to leave, although I am uncertain whether this is true.
   많은 다른점을 알고 있지는 않고 정부의 체계가 다르며 남한인 들이 가지는 자유들에 대해서 알고 있습니다. 남한은 독재주의가 아니며 남한 사람들은 여행을 자유롭게 할 수 있는 것을 알고 있고 북한 주민들은 나라를 떠나지 못한다고 들었으나 정확한 사실인지는 분명하지 않습니다.

5. 미국과 북한은 어떤 관계라고 생각하시나요?
   What relationship do you think the United States has with North Korea?

   Hyeok 🇰🇵 : 지금 상태에서는 서로 적대국이라고 생각합니다.
   As of right now, there is hostility between North and South.

   Jasmine 🇺🇸 : I believe that North Korea and the U.S are at odds with each other. This is because North Korea is very restrictive of freedoms and rights which is something that the U.S publicly stands and fights for.
   불화와 반대가 많다고 생각이 되고, 그럴 수 밖에 없다고 생각합니다. 북한은 자유와 인권에 있어 아주 통제적이지만, 미국에서 자유와 인권은 대중이 가장 많이 일어서고 싸우는 중요한 가치입니다.
   

6. 미국인을 / 아니면 미국 정치인을 만난다면 무엇에 대해서 물어보거나 얘기해보고 싶나요?
   If you get a chance to meet an American or an American politician, what would you say or ask?

   Hyeok 🇰🇵 : 북한의 정권에 대해서 어떻게 생각 하시나요? 대북정책에 있어서 강경책을 펼치는 이유는 무엇인가요? 북한 당국과 북한 주민에 대해서 어떻게 생각하시나요?
   What are your thoughts on N.Korean regime? What are the reasons why America is enforcing a hard-line policy towards North Korean policies? What are your thoughts on North Korea itself and its people?

   북한이탈주민을 만난다면 해주고 싶은 말이나 물어보고 싶은 것은 무엇인가요?
   If you get a chance to meet and have a conversation, what would you say or ask

   Jasmine 🇺🇸 : I would like to see their point of view and hear about their experience living in North Korea. Simply hearing things does not at all compare to actually living them. I would also want to know how I could help them personally as well as all of the people in North Korea.
   북한 안에서 그들의 삶의 이야기를 듣고 그들의 관점에 대해서 들어보고 싶습니다. 아무리 많은 정보를 들어도, 듣기만 하는거는 절대 직접 살아낸 이야기를 듣는것 과는 비교할 수 없으니깐요. 또한 제가 그들을, 또 그들의 민족을, 직접적으로 어떻게 도와주면 좋을지 물어보고 싶습니다.
   

7. 지금의 당신이 정의하는 자유는 무엇인가요?
   How would you define freedom?

   Hyeok 🇰🇵 : 자신의 의사표현을 자유롭게 할 수 있고, 인간의 기본적 인권을 보장받는 것이 자유라고 생각합니다.
   For me, freedom is being able to express myself and being guaranteed with human rights that I deserve to have from my birth.

   Jasmine 🇺🇸 : I would define freedom as having all of our natural, God-given rights. I believe that having freedom does not just mean having physical freedom, to travel and move around, but even more importantly having intellectual freedom. This means being able to read all sides of an event, research on our own, and come to our own conclusions, whatever that may be, regardless of what the government or other people are saying. It means being able to make our own decisions and have control over our future and our life.
   자유는 우리가 창조주에게서 얻은 모든 기본적 인권을 가지는 것이라고 생각합니다. 육체적 자유만이 자유라고 생각하지 않고, 여행을 하고 자유롭게 돌아다닐 수 있고, 무엇보다, 연구와 지식의 자유를 가지는것이 진짜 자유라고 생각합니다. 지식의 자유란, 한 사건의 모든 면을 읽고 배울 수 있으며, 스스로 조사할 수 있고, 자신만의 결과를 낼 수 있는것입니다. 그것이 무엇이 됐던간에, 정부나 다른 사람들이 뭐라고 하던간에. 결론적으론 내가 나만의 결정을 할 수 있고 내 삶과 미래에 대한 지배권을 가지는 것입니다.
